Here are a few different colours I tried out on the onion. The last one worked the best.

    

This one looks too much like a pumpkin. 

This one is too dark. 

This one way missing a bit more colour. 

In my opinion these colours work the best.

I am still working on my characters in Illustrator. Since I am still not entirely sure of how to use the program its coming along slowly.I find the shading very complicated.  Here is what I have done so far:
