Fight club- Movie Scene Review

The movie I chose this week is Fight Club, because people always talk about how good it is, and it really is a good movie. I really enjoyed it. I love watching movies that are not predictable and that have a twist, just like this one. The movie was released in 1999 and was directed by David Fincher.

The movie is about the narrator that works in an office and suffers from insomnia. After being advised by his doctor he joins the testicular support group and then becomes addicted and joins many more other support groups even though there is physically nothing wrong with him. This cures his insomnia for a while until Marla Singer join. The narrator is greatly disturbed by her presence and they decide which support groups each one gets so their paths wont cross.

One day when the narrator gets home he finds his house blown up. Having nobody else to call, he phones Tyler Durden, who sells soap and whom he met on a flight home from a business trip. They meet at a bar and end up having a fist fight. After that the narrator moves in with Tyler in an abandoned house that is falling apart. From then on every Saturday they fight each other outside of the bar which ended up attracting more crowds and eventually the Fight Club was born.

Marla and Tyler begin to have a sexual relationship after Tyler saves Marla when she took an overdose. Fight club spreads all over the world and becomes known as in anti-materialist organisation known as Project Mayhem. After one of the narrators friends gets shot during a mission he wants to shut down the organisation but Tyler is against it. One day Tyler disappears and he travels from one place to the other using the tickets Tyler left behind. He then starts to notice that people he has never met call him Tyler and think he is the leader of fight club. When he finds Tyler he is told that they are both the same person and that the narrator just made him up.

So all this time he was the one running the organisation and that he was the one who slept with Marla. He begins to understand and tries to stop the next plan of Project Mayhem which are bombs placed all over the city. The narrator even goes to the police to confess but then finds out that members from fight club also work there. he ends up fighting Tyler falls and no longer exists in the narrators head. Marla is brought up by his henchmen and they stand together holding hands as they watch the while city explode.

This movie was defiantly not what I was expecting but it was great.

The scene that I picked is at the start of the movie at around 7.5 minutes into it and ends around 3.50 minutes after that.

It starts with the narrator describing his daily life and the struggles he has with insomnia. He is lying in bed unable to sleep. It then moves on to him at his workplace and then his daily life at home. Just in the first minute we learn a lot about the main character and his boring daily life. The only interest he seems to show is his obsession for furniture.

He then goes to hospital to speak about his problems with a doctor. The doctor refuses the narrator's request to give him tablets so he can sleep and instead advises him a natural way to get rid of his insomnia problem. He suggest him to go to a testicular support group.

When the narrator visits the testicular support group, even thought he has no physical problems, he begins to feel a comfort there and manages to cure his insomnia semi-permanently.

Characters:

The Narrator (Cornelius) is acted by Edward Norton. The scene starts with him lying in bed unable to sleep and then continues to show his struggles with insomnia. Throughout the scene he is trying to find a way to cure his insomnia. In the office he uses coffee to keep him awake. Then he seeks a doctor and ask for medication to help him sleep but the doctor advises him to find a natural cure and tells him to visit a testicular support group. There he finds a cure for his insomnia and is able to sleep again. The narrator is dressed like a typical office worker wearing a tie and shirt. On his wrist is a watch, maybe to help him to see what time of day it is since is is always unsure due to his insomnia.

The narrator's Boss comes into the scene around 30 seconds into it holding a folder in his hand and is also wearing a shirt and tie. He has a ring on his right hand. He sits on the narrator's desk for a while explaining his next job to him. From the narrator we find out that his boss only wears a blue tie on Tuesday and that could mean  that the narrator is able to distinguish what time of week it is when looking at his boss's ties. The Boss leaves the scene after a few seconds when he is done talking to his employee, the narrator.

The Doctor enters the scene around 1.50 minutes into it and refuses to give the narrator tablets to treat his insomnia. He is wearing the typical doctors uniform. He seems like an insignificant character but he is very important in the over all story. Without him the narrator would have not gone to support groups and the story would not have unfolded properly. If the doctor would have given him medicine maybe the imaginary character, Tyler, would not have appeared again.

Thomas is one of the testicular victim who tells the others about his life to the support group and enters the scene around 2.42 minutes into the scene. His shirt is dark and depressing just like the story he is telling. John is another victim who is shown for w few seconds toward the end of the scene. There are a few more victims whose names are not revealed and the support group leader.

Taylor Durden was played by Brad Pitt he is shown in this scene three times, only for less than a split second each. So it's not very noticeable. Tyler comes into the scene around 12 seconds when it starts for the first time. This is were the narrator slowly starts to imagine the character, Tyler. For the second time Tyler is seen roughly around 2.23 seconds into the scene beside the doctor. For the last time Tyler is shown at the last second of this scene wrapping one arm around the leader of the testicular support group. The actor who plays the character of Tyler seems well suited for the film as they both have one thing in common. Brad Pitt is a well known popular actor and Tyler's character is also well known and popular in the movie. Tyler wears a bright red leather jacket which is very noticeable and matches his outgoing personality.

Settings:
The narrator is lying in bed that has mostly green covers. After that he is at his workplace which is a plain looking ordinary office with little colours. The colour panel of the office mostly consists of greys and light greens. Overall it's a  very boring looking office. All the lockers, boxes and folders look the same.

The scene cuts back to the narrator in his bathroom sitting on the toilet. The colour panel is similar to the one in the office he works in. His apartment looks just like the ones the narrator looks at in furniture magazines. Everything looks new and unused.

Now the narrator is at the hospital talking to his doctor about his insomnia problems. The colour panels of the hospital are once again similar to the office and his home. It is just like any ordinary hospital with x-rays of peoples bones in the background.

For a short few seconds we see the outside of the building of where the meeting of the support group is held. Then we see the narrator walk up the stairs into the sports hall were the other members are waiting.

Mise-en-scene:

The narrator uses three different blankets which might suggest that his apartment his cold. His house phone is lying beside him, as if he is waiting for someone to call. When the camera focuses on starbucks cup it  could mean that to  the narrator coffee is  part of his daily routine to keep himself awake. But he isn't the only one. Trough a one point perspective we can see his fellow workers are also drinking coffee. The fact that the office and the workers in it is so plain and boring looking could be a metaphor to show how empty and dull the narrators life is. Everyone seems like lifeless, like zombies.

The office is light up brightly despite the dull colours. In the bin beside the narrator's office desk we see empty coffee cups, junk food packaging and fizzy drink cans, this tells us that the character's diet just consists of junk food and energy drinks.

Behind the narrators desk are folders that look very similar to each other. This again could be a metaphor of how the narrator feels like everyday is the same to him. The fact that he uses is bosses tie colour to distinguish what time of the week it is suggest that the narrator is always lost in time due to his insomnia.

The scene cuts back to the narrator in his home, which is also dull like the office he works in. From this the audience learns that not only is his career dull but also his life at home. The fact that his house nearly looks the exact same as from the magazines the narrator looks at proves his obsession for furniture. His apartment is shown almost like an add for telly, advertising the furniture within.

The layout of the narrator's things in his apartment are so perfect looking as if he has never used them. The fact that his fridge is almost empty and only contains old food, junk food and sauces states that the narrator never cooks for himself as his cooker looks unused. His whole apartment looks like it's just for show and he doesn't actually live there. It is more for the visuals rather than the functional us eg. he has an exercise bike but never exercises.

There is constantly a reference shown of time. For example music that sounds like clock ticking, watches on the narrators wrist and clocks hanging on the wall in the background. The reason for that is once again because I think the narrator has no sense of time and needs something to know what time or day it is since he is never sure if he is awake or asleep.

The tag on the doctors chest reveals the location the narrator is in is a hospital. In the background are x-ray scans of a patient and a noticeboard with many notes on it. There are also lockers in the background, which is maybe where the patients files are kept.

After taking the doctors advise he goes to a testicular supports group meeting. For a few seconds we see the outside of the building where it is held and the inner staircase. Since it is dark outside this suggests it is some tome in the evening and there is only the lighting from the building.

The place where the meeting is located is just a normal sports hall with chairs in a circle. When he walks in he walks past a fan maybe indicating that the hall is warm and in the background is a basketball hoop. When the narrator puts on his name tag at the support group we find out that his name is Cornelius, although I am unsure if that is his real name or just a name he made up for when he goes to that support group. Through the name tags the audience can read some of the testicular support group victim's names.

Sounds and Music:

The scene starts with the narrators voice saying that he hasn't slept in six months and then his voice fades as his working day starts. There is no other music playing in the background just sound effects and the voices of the characters talking. When the scene goes to the office we can hear the sound of printers and phones. The fact that there is no music makes this office seem even more boring and lifeless.

When the narrator gets home the only music played is the one that is coming from the phone because he has been put on hold while ordering furniture. Some kind of ticking music starts around the same time.
When the narrator is in hospital crowds can be heard in the distance.

When the narrator walks into the building where the support group is the sound of cars passing can be heard outside and inside people are singing along to a piano somewhere in the distance. This could mean that the building where the support group meets could be rented out for various different things. From then on there is no more music to be heard just the voices of the testicular victims.

Why I liked it/ Why not? What would I change/ not change?

I like this scene because I find it very interesting. I like the way that the narrator's imaginary friend, Tyler, slowly starts to emerge from that scene on wards. It is barely noticeable as it is less that a a split second each time. When I first noticed it I thought it was just my eyes playing tricks on me. There is noting I would change about this scene it  is perfect the way it is and it reveals almost everything about the main character's life within just a few minutes. Not only the script but also the visuals give us information about the characters and places which they are at. The acting is suited for each characters and the overall story is good. I have no complains about this movie.

Since my animation is also about a guy beating up others this could be used as a good reference.

Life Drawing- Skeletal Forms

For this exercise we were told to focus on the head, chest and pelvis as they are the main masses of the body which are all joined together by the spine but they still move independently of each other.

For this particular exercise we were told to look at people in photographs or magazines and draw them as skeletons. This was to help us focus more on were the body parts all join which will help us with Life drawing i the long run. These were drawn with pencil.

For this one we had to lightly use shapes (which are hard to see in this image) to help us get the poses of the model right. We had to pay close attention to the chest and pelvis and the spine which connects them. This was drawn using pencil.

Here a a few quick one minute sketches which were done using charcoal (which I find really hard to use). We were told to just focus on the body forms.

The two drawings on the left, right and bottom left were ten minute drawings-which I found really hard because I kept finishing too early and the figure got too dark.

For this one we had to focus once more on the skeleton form rather than the shapes of the figure.

For the last three drawings a skeleton model was placed beside the real model and we had to draw them both while thinking of their structure and shapes.

Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) - Gallery

This time when I looked at our college gallery I saw some work which I really liked. Most of them were done by the painting students. Here are the ones which I liked most:

Ruth Denham- Painting

The size of this painting was around six A1 sheets put together. I like the black and white colour panel that was used. The image looks like it has a story to it which I think makes it very interesting. It makes me want to know more about the girl in the painting.

Peter Bradley- Painting

This painting was also roughly about six A1 sheets put together. What I like about this painting is that the border of the image isn't straight and that it fades away. It reminds of when in movies people have flashbacks and the border of the frame is never really clear but faded.

Rachel Rose- Painting

I put my friend in the photo to show the size of the painting. The contrast between light and dark work really well in this painting. It is painted so well it almost looks realistic.

Stephen Mannix-Year One

This was also a big painting. Seeing it up clothes I thought it just looked like really messy trees but when looking at it from a distance I thought that it actually looked like it had a lot of depth, as if you could walk into the painting. I think that's the reason why it appealed to me.

Eva Byrne- Printmaking

The style of these images are really interesting and I like them.

The last image on the right  is one of my favourite of these four. I like the unique style and the way the character looks like she has attitude just from the way she is standing.

Cowboy Bebop Movie Review Scene

This week the movie choices were : Alphaville, Brazil, Primer, Raging Bull and Cowboy Bebop. Even though after watching two episodes of the Series Cowboy Bebop and not liking it, I found that the trailer for the movie seemed the most interesting to me out of all the other choices. So this week I have decided to do the movie scene review of Cowboy Bebop.

First of all, this movie is epic. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would and there is good music throughout the whole film. The movie was released in 2001 and was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. The screenplay was written by Keiko Nobumoto, based on the Cowboy Bebop anime series created by Sunrise. Another name for the movie is Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door which was taken from the Bob Dylan song. The character Vincent is also based on Bob Dylan himself. The executive producer for the movie is Takayuki Yoshi.

The story starts of just a few days before Halloween and it is the year 2071. Spike Spiegel is a bounty hunter who works with Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Edward on the vessel Bebop to find a criminal who is planning on killing the population by spreading an unknown virus that has been placed inside of marbels and can spread like dust. They cross paths with a crazy hacker (Lee Sampson) and an ex-military man(Vincent Volaju) that is stated to already be dead according to the records which Ed finds. But there is more to Vincent which the characters discover throughout the movie. Just like in the movie Paprika the question "is this the real world?" is being asked.

Review Scene:

Originally I was thinking of writing about the scene where Ed and Ein (the pet dog) search for Lee Sampson. . I'm not sure why but maybe because I like the character Ed. The scene is a little too short though to write a movie review about so in the end I didn't pick it.

I found it hard to pick a scene from this movie. The last three I decided to chose from were the opening scene, ending scene and the train scene in the middle. I thought that train scenes are in many movies so I decided not to pick it. The ending scene is very important and I like it but I don't want to ruin the movie for people who haven't watched it yet. In the end I decided to pick the opening scene which doesn't ruin the story but tells about the main character and his job. The scene is just over four minutes long. After that the title sequence starts.

The scene I chose starts off with Spike being woken up by Jet's voice. He then walks towards a little convenience store where a guy is guarding the door.

The scene cuts back to the inside of the store where the main criminal is pointing a gun at an employee at the till. Once he fires a shot the scene cuts back to where Jet is, which is outside at the side of the shop. He talks through the walki talki to Spike who is walking towards the shop entrance.

The scene goes back to the inside of the shop to the criminals in the convenience store. At the same time Spike gets closer to the shop's entrance. When he stand in front of the big criminal guard at the entrance he distracts him by looking down and then kicks him and makes him pass out.

The scene goes back to the main criminal threatening the employee. Then Spike walks in listening to his headphones and not paying any attention to the main criminal pointing a gun towards him. The main criminal gets annoyed and walks away from the till towards Spike. Spike distracts him with a party cracker and then side-kicks him once in the groin then shin and then a turning kick into the face. The main criminal gets thrown pack into a coffee machine by the force of the kick. Spike turns on the coffee machine and the hot liquid runs over the main criminals face.

The criminal in the orange jacket runs towards Spike and tries to shoot him. At the same time jet breaks through the ventilation shaft of the shop and punches the other long haired criminal into the stomach. Spike pulls the criminal in the orange jacket over the shelf of the shop and makes him fall onto the shelf on the other side.

Jet puts chains on the long-haired criminals hands. Spike eats a doughnut. Suddenly a fifth criminal walks out of the bathroom. Spike and Jet didn't know about him. The criminal runs towards a granny and hold a gun at her head. Jet drops the gun like he is asked to but Spike points it at the criminal and hoots his shoulder. The criminal falls to the floor and the granny is free. The scene ends with Spike looking all cool spinning his gun in his hand trick.

Characters:

In this scene we only get to see two of the main characters. Those are Spike Spiegel and Jet Black. The other characters are four criminals robbing a shop and the extras in the background and costumers of the shop.
Spike Spiegel enters the scene the very first second he has messy hair maybe suggesting he can be quite lazy when he wants to be. His clothes are very ordinary.

The main criminal at the till is very plain clothes and doesn't look like anything special. The glasses make him look smart like a detective or cop. Unlike the other criminals he looks like the only one who had proper education.

The till employee is wearing the green uniform of the shop. She looks like an ordinary person who has encountered such a situation for the first time. The granny also looks like just any ordinary granny.

Other two criminals are shown around one minute into the movie pointing their guns at costumers. The one in the orange jackets gets knocked out by Spike and the long hair by jet.

The criminal guarding the shop looks big and strong but seems stupid as he falls for Spike's trick and passes out first before the other criminals.

Jet Black comes into the scene as soon as the first gun is fired, around 50 seconds into the scene, standing outside at the side of the store. He looks like a strong body builder who was trained in the army. He isn't shown again till around 2.25 minutes into the scene as he breaks through the ventilation shaft of the shop and enters the scene properly.

The last criminal enters the scene around 2.50 minutes into the movie after having spend all the time in the bathroom without Spike and Jet knowing. He gets shot into the shoulder by Spike.

Setting:

The scene starts off inside the vessel of Bebop where Spike and Jet live, although not much of the vessel is shown. It then shows Spike's legs walking through a street towards a small convenience store. Most of the scene happens in the colourful convenience shop apart from Jet standing at the side of the shop outside when he first enters the scene.

Miseenscene:

The fan which reveals Spike's sleeping face at the start might suggest that he is in a location where air conditioning is needed.

When Spike walks to the shop we can see an urban- looking street that doesn't look like the safest place to be in.

When the outside of the shop is shown we are given small details about it due to signs at the window. For example that it is open 24 hours and that it sells doughnuts and cola.

There is a strong contrast to dark street scene and the colourful interior of the little convenience shop.

Inside of the shop we see a pumpkin balloon in the background, suggesting that Halloween is soon. The costumers don't seem to notice the threat of the criminal at the till yet, as they are casually doing their shopping.

The first time Jet appears there is a ventilation fan of the shop behind him. This is probably the one he crawls through to get into the shop.

When the other two criminals are shown one of them is drinking a drink while pointing a gun at a costumer, this could suggest he is taking it easy and that this is a normal, everyday job for him.

Sound and Music:

The music throughout the whole movie is great. There are all different type of music genres to be heard such as: Country, Jazz , Rock and funk are just some examples.

The scene starts off with the sound of a fan and Jet's voice calling Spike. In the background unsettling music is playing. The music reminds me of a clock ticking.

The sound of a passing car brings the scene from the main base to a urban street scene.

Once the interior of the shop is shown we hear a conversation between the employee and main criminal. In the background we hear some quiet calming classical song played on the radio in the shop. Throughout the middle of the scene the music in the shop becomes more dramatic.

The gun being fired breaks the calm atmosphere that was in the shop.

When we see Spike's legs walk towards the entrance of the shop we hear Jet's voice speaking to him through a walki talki.

Once th efirst criminal is down the music in the shop changes and becomes happier and reminds me of music that would be found in arcades. The music is only played quietly in the background. The playful music could suggest that to Spike this is all just a like a game.

All the other sound effects such as footsteps, doors opening, cans rolling, sound of kicks and punches and toilet flushing, for example,  are put together well. The timing is good.

The sound volume of the gun firing and glass breaking is much louder than all the other sounds and makes one jump which adds to the dramatic effect of the scene.

What I liked/not liked. Why? What I would/wouldn't I change?

I hate the woman's voice that works at the till, It's so annoying. It's way too high pitch. I would love to change that if I could. Apart from that I think this scene couldn't get anymore awesome than it already is. This scene makes Spike look like a really cool character. After having watched this movie I might consider trying to watch the series of Cowboy bebop Properly this time.

Parts of this scene are similar of how I want my Short Animation to be like. Such as a dodgy- looking streets, fighting scenes and the view of just Spike's legs walking.

Here is the scene which I chose:

Fictional or nor please write down their characteristics and features.
  2. Then we have to select a series of real locations which have similar or sympathetic qualities to those listed above. Consider that these locations may have one or all of the required qualities. We also have to consider that any character or features we would like to photograph may be captured through photographing non-related personnel or subject matter.
  3. We then have to build a portfolio of 12 photos from which we can use as reference. It is paramount that these photos express more than simple documentation and collectiveness. They must be crafted and composed with a developed understanding of how your shots may eventually materialise.

Camera shots which I might consider for my animation:

  • Long shot
  • Dutch tilt shot
  • point of view
  • close up
  • Extreme close up
  • Bird's eye
  • Worm's eye
  • Medium close up
  • Wide shot
  • Over shoulder shot
  • Track out track in
  • Zoom out zoom in
  • One point perspective
  • Fish eye
  • Low angle

The most important object in my animation are the binoculars which will enable the main character to see a situation from a different point of view.

Most of the Settings for my animations will be in alleyways which is why I have many pictures of alleyways and dodgy- looking places.

My animation has three main characters and they are the only characters from which the faces will be shown throughout my animation. I am still unsure of their details, such as names and age but I have a clear idea of what they could look like.

Characters:

The main character has what I call a Lazy-green- Mohawk which slightly hangs down over his face and is in his late teens (17 or 18). His height is in the middle and he doesn't look weak or strong. He Loses his temper easily and his face expression always looks kind of angry and annoyed and he has a stretcher and a bar in his left ear. He wears an open shirt with a t-shirt underneath and wears straight cut pants with boots. Looks a bit like a punk.

The second most important character is the one who gets beaten up by the main character. He is much taller and has a better built than him and is around 20. Even though he looks strong he is actually weak. He always wears a blue baseball cap sideways and vans (shoes). His jumper and pants are baggy and he has a lazy personality. Looks a bit like the skater type.

The third most important character is the girl who gets mugged at the end and saved by the main character. Her name is Ashi and she has vibrant bright pink hair which matches her personality. She is wearing a loose top over her shorts and wears converse (shoes). She is 19 and is kind of short. This character is based on a friend of mine.

The 12 pictures which I chose:

Since my settings are different type of alleyways, there are also many different pictures which I took of alleyways.

I want one of the settings to look similar to this one. One side an abandoned house and on the other side a graffiti wall.

Old shed and gate covered in colourful graffiti.

I want to use this kind of camera angle in one of my scenes to just show the main character walking.

Abandoned train station building.

Interesting angle and graffiti.

More nice graffiti.

I want to use a camera shot like this of the main character in my animation.

I might use an angle like this for my animation.

Creepy looking alleyway with main character standing against the wall with only a bit of street light.

Bow of an alleyway which looks cool and mysterious.

I want to use a low-angle shot at some part of the animation when the binoculars will be on the floor.

I want to use this kind of face close-up for some characters. The person in the picture is the one the female character in my story is based on.
