The Deserted Village

Team Proposal
We were given a group project called the Deserted Village. We are required to create an animation in response to Oliver Goldsmith’s poem from 1770. The stanzas that we were given to interpret were Stanza 15 and 16 (Line 217-250). From our initial reading of the poem we understand that it is set in rural Ireland in the 18th century. The imagery describes what seems to be a public building. Stanza 15 describes the building in its prime, festive and full of life. Stanza 16 then describes as abandoned, cold and gloomy.

We are going to use these two sets of atmospheric moods to guide our stylistic approach. We are thinking of using light and dark colour schemes, possibly combined with different styles of animation to create a stark visual contrast.

The possible techniques we are thinking of exploring are stop-motion, prop making, and stage building. Combining traditional and digital techniques, we are hoping to emulate a pop-up book aesthetic.

The animation must be long enough to sustain our interpretation of the narrative. The animation must also include voiceovers and sound effects. Ours stylistic approach should be deprived from our group brainstorming sessions and experimentation.

We are planning to communicate with each other using a private community account in google+.

We plan to meet tomorrow to further our ideas and approaches and to break down the poem over the weekend to get a better understanding of it.
